Archived Content Exception Decision Tree

Use this step-by-step tool to determine if your digital content may qualify for the archived content exception or if it must be accessible with WCAG 2.1 AA now.

  1. Step 1: Is the content still used to support instruction, services, or communication?
    • Yes – It must be accessible now. Exception does not apply.
    • No – Proceed to Step 2.

  2. Step 2: Was the content created before April 24, 2026?
    • Yes – Proceed to Step 3.
    • No – It must be accessible. Exception applies to content created before 04/24/26.

  3. Step 3: Has the content been changed in any way since archived (other than updates for purposes like web server migration, virus protection, URL changes, or redaction of personally identifiable information)?
    • Yes – It must be accessible. Any edits void the exception.
    • No – Proceed to Step 4.

  4. Step 4: Is the content clearly labeled and stored in a designated archive area?
    • Yes – The exception would apply, but an accessible version must still be provided upon request.
    • You must make the content accessible or move it into a clearly labeled archive.
